Traffic restrictions due to construction work on the Shin-Iriyama Tunnel on National Route 158 (scheduled to be lifted on April 24th)

Post Preview Updated: April 17, 2026 Traffic restrictions are currently in place on National Route 158 (near Nagawado Dam) due to the construction of the new Iriyama Tunnel, but these restrictions are scheduled to be lifted at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2026. After the restrictions are lifted, the new Iriyama Tunnel and Iriyama Tunnel ② will be two-way traffic, and Iriyama Tunnel ① will be one-way traffic, as before the construction. Current restrictions (until 3:00 PM on April 24) New Iriyama Tunnel: Closed to traffic Iriyama Tunnel ① and ②: One-way alternating traffic all day (including weekends and holidays) Traffic controllers are stationed on site. Please follow the signs and instructions of the controllers and proceed safely. Last updated: March 18, 2026 To all visitors to Okuhida Onsenkyo You can travel from Takayama city center to Hirayu Onsen as usual by using the detour (Takayama city road). Traffic congestion may occur near the detour, but it is passable. This detour is the fastest route for regular cars and route buses. Detour along National Route 158 (shortest route) Detour via Takayama city road Before reaching the restricted area, you will detour onto the city road and rejoin National Route 158. The additional travel time is approximately 10 minutes. If you are concerned about traffic congestion, you can also use the following alternative routes. Alternative route 1 Prefectural Road 76 (via Kamitakara Hongo area) The distance is short, but it is a mountain road so it is a route for those who are used to driving. Alternative route 2 Prefectural Road 75 (via Furukawa and Kamioka in Hida City) This road is wide and easy to drive on. This is recommended for those who are not used to mountain roads. Summary On February 25, 2026, a landslide occurred on National Route 158 in the Shioya area of Nyukawa-cho, Takayama City, resulting in traffic restrictions on a portion of the route. Post Preview Updated: April 17, 2026 Traffic restrictions are currently in place on National Route 158 (near Nagawado Dam) due to the construction of the new Iriyama Tunnel, but these restrictions are scheduled to be lifted at 3:00 PM on Friday, April 24, 2026. After the restrictions are lifted, the new Iriyama Tunnel and Iriyama Tunnel ② will be two-way traffic, and Iriyama Tunnel ① will be one-way traffic, as before the construction. Current restrictions (until 3:00 PM on April 24) New Iriyama Tunnel: Closed to traffic Iriyama Tunnel ① and ②: One-way alternating traffic all day (including weekends and holidays) Traffic controllers are stationed on site. Please follow the signs and instructions of the controllers and proceed safely. Construction Overview The new Iriyama Tunnel construction involves excavating and widening the existing tunnel that branches into a Y shape underground near Nagawado Dam to create a new tunnel (tunnel length L=410m). ▼ For details, please check the Nagano National Highway Office website. JR Central has made an announcement regarding the expected resumption of service on the Takayama Main Line between Sugihara Station and Inotani Station. Service on the Takayama Main Line between Sugihara Station and Inotani Station has been suspended since Wednesday, March 18, 2026. Last updated: March 18, 2026 To all visitors to Okuhida Onsenkyo You can travel from Takayama city center to Hirayu Onsen as usual by using the detour (Takayama city road). Traffic congestion may occur near the detour, but it is passable. This detour is the fastest route for regular cars and route buses. Detour along National Route 158 (shortest route) Detour via Takayama city road Before reaching the restricted area, you will detour onto the city road and rejoin National Route 158. The additional travel time is approximately 10 minutes. If you are concerned about traffic congestion, you can also use the following alternative routes. Alternative route 1 Prefectural Road 76 (via Kamitakara Hongo area) The distance is short, but it is a mountain road so it is a route for those who are used to driving. Alternative route 2 Prefectural Road 75 (via Furukawa and Kamioka in Hida City) This road is wide and easy to drive on. This is recommended for those who are not used to mountain roads. Summary On February 25, 2026, a landslide occurred on National Route 158 in the Shioya area of Nyukawa-cho, Takayama City, resulting in traffic restrictions on a portion of the route. Access from Takayama city center to the Okuhida Onsenkyo area is possible as usual via a detour (Takayama City road). Both private cars and route buses can use the detour. The various hot spring resorts in Okuhida Onsenkyo (Hirayu, Fukuchi, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio, Shin-Hotaka), the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway, and the Abotoge Road (towards Matsumoto) are all operating as usual.
