Hirayu Folk Museum
Hirayu Folk Museum and Hirayu no Yu are hidden gems worth visiting when visiting Hirayu Onsen. The former Takakuwa House, a gassho-style house relocated from Toga Village, Toyama Prefecture, over 40 years ago, and the former Toyosaka House, a Takayama City Cultural Property relocated from the Kurabashira district, are completely free to visit and rest in. The aroma of the hearth (which is always lit) will help you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This area is also characterized by its concentration of important buildings and historical sites, including the Shinohara Muzen Memorial Museum, known as the father of Hida social education, Hirayu Shrine, Yakushido Hall, and the remains of rice terraces. The adjacent Hirayu no Yu bath is a day-use bathing facility available for a small fee. This popular outdoor bath at Hirayu Onsen features brown water known as nukutomariyu (meaning warm water). After your bath, relax on the gassho-style tatami mats.
